Saint-Sever, an important medieval town, is the key to the passage between the pine plain and the rolling Chalosse. Its strategic location overlooking the Adour river explains its occupation since the protohistory. The listed site of Morlanne was the seat of the Gallo-Roman camp and palace, perhaps the first martyr's church of Saint Sever and since 1932, the arena.

The town is dominated by the majestic presence of the Benedictine abbey founded in 988, inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list of the Routes of Compostela. It was founded and protected in 1100. The fortifications were enlarged in the 15th century (towers, watchtower, gate) by integrating the Jacobin convent (1280 - 1686). Private mansions (16th, 18th, 19th centuries) punctuate the streets of the town.
